You're not alone. Quite apart from the diplomatic dimension, I think it's really sad that we encourage a culture that finds it acceptable to cage animals which, in the wild, would roam over miles of forest (a male panda has a territory of around 10 square kilometers).

The argument that this has something to do with conservation is also dubious. The reason panda's need conserving is because of pressure on their natural habitat, but trying to breed them in cages in Edinburgh will do nothing at all to help that.

I long ago quietly stopped going to Edinburgh zoo. But now it's becoming a circus, it's time to speak up.

I grew up in Kenya and watched Wangari struggle to defend the environment, i watched her on the television when she got beated up by the President moi regime police, i watched her publicaly humialted called 'mad woman', i read how she was imprisoned, how she sometimes had to live in fear of her own life, the hunger strike but she never gave in in fighting for what she believed, in I admired, her courage, selflessness and her fight for human rights, justice, peace and made me realise there was hope for women in a very patriachy society.
R.I.P Wangari in her memory I am planning an even for tree planting in Edinburgh in her honour.

A truly inspirational woman - green in a country where it was unpopular and even dangerous to be green. Independent minded and free. When he divorced her, her husband said, "she was strong-willed, and could not be controlled". Oh yes!

I think that what local voters have demonstrated, like voters across Scotland in May, is that on the whole, unfortunately, they are not really very concerned about green/progressive issues.
