Reacting to the breaking news that Labour and SNP have signed a deal to govern Edinburgh, Steve Burgess, Convenor of the Green Group of Councillors said:
“This was always the most likely conclusion to negotiations and it brings clarity to the council administration. We looked seriously at various options over the weekend but recognised that the arithmetic meant that Green councillors would always be dispensable and that would be a major weakness. However, by making our intentions not to enter coalition clear earlier today we ensured that a Labour-Conservative coalition was no longer attractive to Labour either.
“I wish the new coalition well and I hope that the spirit of consensus that has been developed over the last three days will continue. The Greens will continue to work for that as well as offering robust scrutiny of the Administration and the development of bold and innovative policies for the capital.”
Not a Green member or supporter, (although I agree with many of your policies)
I just wanted to congratulate your Councillors on an astute piece of politics. The Tory policies are the antithesis of yours, (and mine). You did the people of Edinburgh a huge favour by keeping them from having any chance to implement them.
Bravo!
Congratulations on the increase in your vote and representation on Edinburgh Council! That’s good for Edinburgh.
As a non-member, but sympathiser and occasional Green voter, I am not sure if your participation in a three-party administration (in which you would have been the smallest party) would not have been a mixed blessing anyway
As things stand, this is an opportunity for “supportive opposition”, and of the three opposition parties I would expect your contribution to be easily the most sophisticated – work on consolidating your presence and media focus to gain recognition as the main solution-focused opposition party, and you will double your representation again next time round.
Power to 12 elbows!
