European Elections 2009
Elections to the European Parliament took place on 4 June 2009 and Greens in Edinburgh were campaigning hard in support of our top candidate, Elaine Morrison.
In the event we fell just short of electing a Scottish Green MEP. In Edinburgh we scored 14%, the highest anywhere in Scotland and putting us well on track to return two Green MSPs in 2011 and at least eight councillors in 2012.
Full results are attached: the highlights include 17% and third place, ahead of the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh East; 16.6% in Edinburgh North and Leith; and fourth place in Edinburgh South West, with 12.6% ahead of the Liberal Democrats.
See footage of our campaign launch and watch the election broadcast made with our sister parties in England and Wales. Also watch the pan-European broadcast.
The Edinburgh and Midlothian Branch set a target to raise £3,000 so that we can get our positive message out to voters. You can still help us meet this target or even exceed it by clicking the donation button at the foot of this page. Please note that in order for us to comply with electoral regulations you must be on the electoral roll in the UK and give your name and address when making a donation. Many thanks for your support!
We hand-delivered 44,000 ”European election special” ward newsletters in various parts of the city; put up lampost posters in the week before and made sure we have a visible presence at polling stations on 4 June itself. The Greens recycle and re-use all of our lampost placards so if you spot any still in place after Sunday 7 June please let us know.
