Caltongate planning vote slammed

Green councillors have slammed a city council decision to approve a controversial development in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town.

The Planning Committee today voted 8-6 in favour of the controversial Caltongate development off the Royal Mile, which has been put forward by developers, Artisan. The development comprises offices, shops, hotels and some housing and has been bitterly contested by local residents and heritage bodies who have argued for alternative schemes, focusing on affordable homes, workspace for small businesses and public space.

Green member of the Planning Committee, Councillor Nigel Bagshaw was one of the six councillors who voted against the Caltongate plans, describing them as more appropriate for a lunar landscape than the middle of one of Scotland’s most historic neighbourhoods.
