Lothian MSP hears local fracking concerns

Alison Johnstone, Green MSP for Lothian and a member of Holyrood’s economy and energy committee, is promising to keep up the fight against fracking following a public meeting in Musselburgh. A vast swathe of Scotland, from Ayrshire to East Lothian, has been earmarked by the UK Government as ripe for the controversial gas drilling technique with laws due to be passed to allow fracking companies to drill below people’s homes without consent. The public meeting, hosted by East Lothian Greens, heard from Alison Johnstone about the efforts made since 2011 by Green MSPs to resist developments such as fracking, coalbed methane and underground coal gasification. AJ in chamber for webAlison said: “People living in East Lothian are rightly concerned at the determination of the UK Government to allow fracking, and the Scottish Government’s less than clear position. “I found it extremely encouraging that people in the Musselburgh area want to know more about what’s happening and are keen to protect their communities, the environment and our economy. Chasing unburnable fossil fuels would be a huge distraction when we have so much potential in renewable energy, which will provide long-term, high-quality jobs.” “I will continue to campaign on this issue and look forward to supporting the many people across the Lothians who feel the same.”
