A solid base of Green voters built, in a tough election, and now raring to go for Holyrood 2016.
That is the message from Edinburgh Greens following the declaration of results from the Westminster 2015 election. The Greens stood in every constituency in the city for the first time since 2005 and made good progress, doubling votes across the city and beating the Lib Dems in 4 out of the 5 areas. Sarah Beattie Smith took 5.4% and 3,140 votes in Edinburgh North & Leith and Peter McColl took 2,809 votes (6.0%) in Edinburgh East.
“This has been a time to build solid foundations for the Scottish elections next year. We’ve recruited hundreds of new members and taken the Green message to new areas and new people. We’ve doubled our vote in the process.
“Of course, we always knew that this was going to be a tough election for us. People who have been voting Green and are going to vote Green in even larger numbers next year, have chosen to vote elsewhere on this occasion, most obviously for the SNP.
“With a fairer voting system, thousands of people have told us they’ll be backing the Greens next year. Our job is to give them the vision of a modern, sustainable, more equal Scotland which we can all champion.
“That work starts today!”
