Green Team shapes up at City Chambers

It is down to real business at Edinburgh’s City Chambers now as the committees and bodies that make up the Council are formed.

On Thursday (24 May), at the first real Council meeting since the election, the Council agreed its key spokespeople and places on all of the Committees were confirmed.

It was not without controversy, however, on two counts:

1. All opposition parties condemned the decision by the Labour-SNP Administration to appoint one of its own members as convenor of the important Audit Committee – conventionally given to an opposition party member to ensure robust scrutiny.

2. The Administration also threw out all notions of proportionality by giving the SNP a sixth place on the 15-member Planning Committee, rather than giving the Greens a second place.

For the record Green councillors will take up places on committees as follows:

  • Policy and Strategy: Steve Burgess, Maggie Chapman
  • Culture and Leisure: Chas Booth
  • Education, Children and Families: Melanie Main, Gavin Corbett
  • Economic Development: Maggie Chapman
  • Transport, Infrastructure and Environment: Nigel Bagshaw, Chas Booth
  • Health, Social Care and Housing: Gavin Corbett, Maggie Chapman
  • Finance and Resources: Gavin Corbett
  • Planning: Nigel Bagshaw
  • Audit: Melanie Main
  • Licensing: Chas Booth
  • Regulatory: Steve Burgess
  • Police Board: Steve Burgess
  • Fire Board: Melanie Main
  • Joint Valuation Board: Nigel Bagshaw

The Group Convenor is Steve Burgess.  Melanie Main will act as Bailie, supporting the Lord Provost in civic duties.
