GREENS WELCOME COUNCIL SUPPORT OF FREE ENERGY METERS FOR HOMES

Green Councillor Maggie Chapman today succeeded in pushing Edinburgh Council to support plans to install clip on electricity meters in homes.Cllr Chapman’s motion calls for cooperation with energy supply companies such as Scottish Power to distribute real time display units to households. Cllr Chapman said:

“These meters offer an excellent way for people to control both energy use, and the amount of money they’re spending on electricity. This is particularly important for poorer households where energy expenditure can be a particularly significant cause of poverty. By installing these meters, people will get a better idea of how much energy different appliances use – and will be able to change their use accordingly.”

Cllr Chapman, who represents Leith Walk, is pushing for the meters as an interim measure in anticipation of future distribution of smart meters that measure all energy use (including gas) in the household. Cllr Chapman said:

“It is important that we act urgently to tackle fuel poverty and to reduce carbon emissions. While smart meters are more effective, the opportunity to deliver meters throughout Edinburgh is not something we can delay.”
