This is the second by-election in the ward because the LibDem candidate elected in November resigned after just a few days. A sitting SNP councillor has also resigned so there will be two councillors elected on 23 January.
Meet our candidate
Daniel is campaigning on a message of taking serious action for climate justice, fair housing and local democracy.
Use your 1st vote for the candidate who will:
- Stay in office until at least the next elections in 2027 (a tall order for some other parties!)
- Prioritise affordable, good quality housing and transport
- Be a constructive opposition to the crumbling Labour administration
- Fight the tide of misinformation and self-interest that’s holding back a greener, fairer Edinburgh
Improving the routes for people to travel sustainably in the Colinton-Fairmilehead will be one of Daniel’s priorities.
Housing is a major issue in this election, with the Council having declared a housing emergency. Homelessness levels in the city are soaring and many people struggle to afford a decent home. Greens want further rent controls to take financial pressure off tenants. We support strict control of AirBnB-style holiday lets that reduce the supply of available housing, and we want to put Tourist Tax revenue towards affordable homes.
Our 2022 Green Manifesto for Edinburgh sets out our policies for the current Council term, and our ten City Councillors were elected to implement it.
Daniel lived in Oxgangs as a child, attending primary school there in the mid-90s, and now lives in the Colinton area. He has a degree in environmental microbiology and currently works in healthcare logistics. In his free time he enjoys photography and the outdoors.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting more people to hear about their experiences of living in the area and how public services have been holding up under Council cuts.
We’re at a critical point for action on climate change. We urgently need the talk of emissions targets over the last decades to turn into real progress towards net zero. To do this, we are calling for a just transition that safeguards the rights and well-being of working people.
This must be transformative at every level of our society, which is why local authorities and communities are so important in bringing about the changes that are needed.”
Daniel Milligan, Scottish Green Party candidate
