This walk in Ratho will span a church from 1222, areas of outstanding beauty, farmland, Iron Age carvings, clay bings (from the oil extraction), former and today’s quarrying, the Union Canal, and a surf park.
The walk should take about an hour. The meeting point will be the Edinburgh Canal Centre, where there is free parking. There is also easy access from the canal for those cycling. The bus to get is the 70 Lothian Country service.
Access: The paths are all in pretty good condition (mainly pavement), with some inclines but not overly steep. There will be some parts not suitable for wheelchairs. Good walking shoes and suitable outdoor clothing are necessary.
The Bridge Inn will be open for teas, coffee or a late lunch.
Absolutely family friendly. There is a plan for a short bit that is hard with a stroller so the plan is for someone to take those with less abilities on a flat rollable route.
Dog friendly too but leashed (farm animals nearby) .
