A personal message from Councillor Steve Burgess, Green candidate for Southside/Newington ward
In 2007 I was elected as the Green Councillor for Southside/Newington ward – which also includes Dumbiedykes, Sciennes, Blackford, the Grange, Prestonfield and Mayfield – and since then I’ve been working to represent constituents and contributing to making Edinburgh a better and fairer City to live in.
I’m standing for re-election in May because there’s a lot more that needs to be done to improve the quality of life in our City and also because I enjoy the job. It is often challenging and rewarding although sometimes frustrating.
I’ve been able to make a personal difference as a Green councillor by proposing dozens of initiatives at Council level. Not all of them have succeeded because Greens are not in power (yet!), but quite a few have got through, such as ‘Park Green’, the sliding scale for parking permits linked to vehicle climate-changing pollution, improved provision for cycling and most recently winning a 6-month reprieve for Leith Waterworld from closure.
I’ve also worked alongside fellow Green Councillors Alison Johnstone and Maggie Chapman and together we have fought the Green corner including opposing school and nursery closures, stopping ill-conceived changes to care services and protecting our open spaces from being built on.
If I’m re- elected in May I’ll continue working to ensure Edinburgh becomes still greener.
Only 13 votes separated me from a second LibDem councillor in 2007 – so every vote really will count. To get those vital Green votes, I need your help raising funds for example to print election leaflets to deliver to every door in the ward – every pound will count too. I’d really like to raise at least £200 from donations to help meet some of these costs.
So please do consider supporting my campaign. You can donate by sending a cheque to “Edinburgh Green Party” to me at 23 Royal Park Terrace, Edinburgh EH8 8JB or donate online. If you are donating online please also email me at email@example.com so that I can add you below and make sure it is allocated to this specific area:
