Lothian Green MSP report – May 2025

Lorna Slater’s report to Edinburgh & West Lothian Greens

Top & Timely

I signed and helped to organise this letter to the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament about their new segregated facilities policies in the Parliament. I joined Patrick Harvie in asking questions about this matter to the Scottish Parliament’s Corporate Body.

Parliamentary work continues very busy with many bills coming through in areas of importance to the Scottish Greens: Housing, Land Reform, Natural Environment, Community Wealth building and more.

The rise of Reform, and the subsequent drift to the right of the Tories and Labour, mean that we are spending more time defending equalities matters, speaking up for immigrants and asylum seekers and being the voices of anti-racism.

Media & Chamber

I appeared on Debate Night in Hamilton on Wednesday the 28th.

I spoke in support of Scotland’s Assisted Dying Bill at Stage 1. The bill has passed stage 1 and will now move on to the amendment stages.

I appeared on BBC Radio 4 Any Questions where the topics covered included Scotland’s assisted dying bill, immigration, housing.

Regional & Campaigns

At the town hall meeting on Holyrood Park is on May 19th at the Charteris Greyfriars Centre, we hear from HES and the Council and elected an interim committee to set up an official ‘Friends of Holyrood Park’ organisation. The next meeting will be in about 6 months to ratify a constitution for the group and elect a formal committee.

Committee & Portfolio

The Committee for Economy and Fair, of which I’m a member, will be starting to hear evidence on Community Wealth Building bill in June, so I have been meeting with Cooperatives UK, Social Enterprise Scotland, Neil McInroy and others to prepare my lines of questioning.
