Green astonishment as capital high school delayed for sixth time

Edinburgh Green councillors have reacted with astonishment at news that the opening of the new Boroughmuir High School has been delayed for a sixth time, to January 2018.

Originally scheduled to be opened in August 2016, the award-winning school has suffered a series of delays at the hands of the contractor O’Hare McGovern, who are building a school in Scotland for the first time.

Green Education spokesperson, Cllr Melanie Main said:

“I am astonished that Boroughmuir High School has been delayed for a sixth time and will now be almost a year and a half late.  As recently as February we were assured the site supervision had been stepped up and that the contractor had increased capacity on site to hand over the school by 16 June.

“Parents, pupils and staff will be dismayed by this news so the first priority must be to ensure a smooth transition whenever the new school is finally ready. But, at the same time I will be calling on the council to look at all possible legal and financial penalties for the contractor who has so dismally failed the school community.

“If it was not so serious it would be farcical.”
