EDINBURGH FLOODING CASH: GREENS WILL TACKLE CAUSE OF FLOODING NOT JUST CONSEQUENCES

Responding to the Executive announcement of £22.5 million for the Braid Burn flood prevention scheme, Green Lothians MSP Mark Ballard today said:

“This funding is to be welcomed as it will reassure local residents and business that their will be no repeat of the disastrous floods of 2000.

“However, it is y et another example of the mounting bill from climate instability and, as with plans for flood prevention on the Water of Leith, the defences will have to be higher to cope with climate change. Greens would tackle the causes of flooding not just the consequences, and offer communities substantial support to help them reduce carbon emissions – Edinburgh could and should benefit from this. “The Executive’s decision to allow the SRU to build on the Water of Leith floodplain at Murrayfield is wrong. Costly schemes such as this can be avoided by preserving flood plains. In Portobello, councillors should not even be considering building a library by the burn if the 5-a-side pitches are redeveloped, and they need to carefully consider what is put on the High Street Scottish Power site.”
