Greens: Edinburgh coalition must rebuild shattered credibility

Green councillors have demanded that City of Edinburgh Council rebuild its shattered credibility as the fall-out from the schools closures debacle continues.

The Greens have welcomed the collapse of the plans to axe schools and nurseries.  However, they say that they are astonished at the SNP, in particular, in claiming to have been misled by officials and Liberal Democrat councillors.

Convenor of the Green Group of Councillors, Alison Johnstone, said:

“The about-turn by Edinburgh’s SNP councillors may be designed to seek the moral high ground but voters will easily see through the spin.  This astonishing turn of events shows just how ill-prepared the SNP group were to represent the interests of Edinburgh’s citizens.  No amount of slippery rhetoric can disguise the reality that the ruling administration had very little grasp of education policy, far less a vision for the future of the city.

“It has been a dark few weeks in the history of politics in Edinburgh.  The SNP and Liberal Democrat groups must gather together what shreds of credibility remain and rebuild trust with the public.

“Green councillors will redouble our efforts to hold this tainted administration to account.
