Green councillor and top Green candidate for Holyrood, Alison Johnstone, has backed proposals to introduce an “Edinburgh pound” designed to boost local shops and services. Councillor Johnstone is seeking Council backing to test the feasibility of the idea which has been put forward by Transition Edinburgh.
She said: “One of the great things about a local currency is that it draws attention to and provides support to our local economy and the goods and services you can find on the high street.
“Many local businesses are in competition with national chains and have competition from the internet and large suburban shopping centres.
“This encourages people to spend money locally.”
