The Greens’ lead Euro candidate Elaine Morrison will tomorrow, Tuesday 2nd June, visit Meadows and Morningside ward with local Green Councillor Alison Johnstone to meet campaigners for local shops in Tollcross.
The pair will see first hand the impact the determined Traders Association are having, and discuss ways in which elected Greens at various levels can help support local business.
Lead Green Euro Candidate Elaine Morrison and Green Councillor Alison Johnstone will be at the King’s Theatre tomorrow at 3pm and will meet with local shopkeepers.
Councillor Alison Johnstone said:
“Across this ward, there are great examples of small businesses coming together to boost trade. Bruntsfield Traders have a loyalty card scheme, Marchmont and Sciennes and Tollcross are cutting plastic waste with their cloth bags which promote their shops too, and in Tollcross traders have recently sponsored flags on the famous Bruntsfield Links golf course. They really are doing all they can to help develop the area and highlight the benefits of shopping local. The longevity and success of many of these businesses proves that quality and good service can survive the impact of the recession and that they can compete with the growing number of supermarkets in the area.”
Elaine Morrison said:
“All levels of government must play a part in defending our small businesses, which are absolutely vital to the communities they serve.
“The current economic crisis underlines why we have to look for alternatives to the economic model which has failed us so badly. We need to support this kind of work on the ground and back local business in communities across Scotland. It’s good for the economy and the environment, and it just makes our communities better and more enjoyable places to live.
“As Scotland’s Green MEP I will work tirelessly to ensure the voice of small business gets heard over the lobbying efforts of the multinationals.”
