Green councillor Alison Johnstone has secured City Council backing in her campaign to make sure that Waverley Market site in central Edinburgh is not given away to private developers.
Cllr Johnstone’s motion to full Council today (2 February 2012) has ensured that the Council will write to the Scottish Parliament to ask that Waverley Market is exempted from the Long Leases (Scotland) Bill currently at the Parliament. Without that exemption the high-value site, currently occupied by a shopping mall, could be given away as a result of it being let on an extremely long lease or more than 175 years.
“I first raised this problem more than a year ago, having had it brought to my attention by land campaigner, Andy Wightman. Waverley Market is one of the most valuable sites in the city and I am glad that fellow councillors have recognised the need for it to be retained for the future. I trust that MSPs will pay due heed.”
