Top Green Holyrood candidate, Alison Johnstone, has won additional help for hard-pressed schools over energy efficiency and costs.Last week, The Edinburgh Evening News devoted its main front page story to Alison’s motion to the City Council today, asking for a full energy improvement plan for schools, as described in Alison’s blog. Parents also wrote en masse to the City Council to raise the issue.
Yesterday, as reported by the Evening News, all schools received a letter from the City Council, saying that over £500,000 had been found to address energy overspends given the prolonged cold spell. The letter also highlighted the need for longer term improvements.
Alison, who is also a Green councillor in the city, welcomed the concession but warned that “the real priority is to make it much easier for schools to improve energy efficiency and manage temperatures in classrooms, while also looking at how schools can become hubs for renewable technology like wind turbines and solar panels. Otherwise we are back at square one next winter.”
