Greens in Shandon launch campaign to save local post office

Green campaigners in the Shandon area of the city have launched a campaign to save their local post office in Slateford Road.

As part of a UK wide closure programme, the Shandon branch has been earmarked for closure as early as November.  Members of the Fountainbridge / Craiglockhart group of Edinburgh Green Party are going door to door with information about the plans and are encouraging local residents to raise their concerns.

Fountainbridge / Craiglockhart Green Group convenor, Gavin Corbett said:

“Our local post office is part of a network of local shops in the community.  Removing such a vital service is another nail in the coffin of vibrant local shops at the very time when we should be discouraging unnecessary car journeys.

“The people who will be hardest hit by closure are older people and those with young children, especially at a time when our local royal mail depot is moving from nearby Roseburn to South Gyle.

“That is why we are urging the Post Office to think again and for the Government to do more to protect and enhance local services.

The Greens are distributing 2,000 leaflets in the Shandon area.  The deadline for submissions is 29 September 2008.
