School closures: Greens welcome SNP u-turn but say pain could have been spared

Green councillors on City of Edinburgh Council welcomed a decision by SNP councillors to withdraw support from the schools closures programme.  However, the Greens hit out at the SNP for having caused so much anguish in the first place.

The Convenor of the Green Councillors Group, Alison Johnstone, said:

“The u-turn by the SNP leaves the Liberal Democrats isolated with their school closures plans and means that it will face certain defeat.  However, an awful lot of heartache would have been spared if the SNP and Lib Dems had properly scrutinised officials’ plans in the first place.

“We now have a breathing space to sort out a proper, long-term vision for the city’s schools and nurseries and for services for families as a whole.  We need to understand better what will attract more families to stay in the city and to change course from recent trends.
