Melanie Main

Melanie MainMelanie Main is the Councillor and Green Spokesperson for Meadows / Morningside ward.

Melanie was brought up in Edinburgh’s New Town, before moving out to Midlothian.  She studied at Edinburgh University where she had her first taste of politics: she was elected Hononary Treasurer of Edinburgh University Students Association which came with a sabbatical year and was the first woman to sit on the University Finance Committee.

After graduating Melanie left Edinburgh for London, where she worked in IT and then began a career in what was then very political ‘Alternative Comedy’.  She produced ‘probably London’s most influential Comedy Club’ according to The Guardian, worked for BBC Radio one and was a regular promoter at the Edinburgh Fringe, introducing Julian Clary, Jo Brand and Mark Thomas amongst others.

In 1998 Melanie returned home to Edinburgh to raise her family. During that time she met Alison Johnstone, who introduced her to Robin Harper and the Green Party.

Melanie has been Chair of Sciennes Primary PTA and served on the School Council. She has been a member of Marchmont and Sciennes Community Council (MSCC) for 6 years and has served terms as Treasurer and most recently Chair. In 2010 MSCC campaigned hard for and won a significant concession to include local main roads in the 20mph pilot.
