Leith & Leith Walk team AGM @ Leith Community Centre
Jun 13 @ 19:00 – 20:30

Team meeting and AGM of the Leith & Leith Walk sub-branch – your local Green group.

Leith & Leith Walk Greens became a sub-branch of the Scottish Green Party in 2018, which reflects our active membership. We have ambition to grow as a group and become more effective in spreading the Green message in Leith. We’d love to see you at the AGM to help shape our future.

Be part of the sub-branch committee

We would encourage all Leith & Leith Walk members to consider standing for a committee position, to be elected at the AGM – it’s a great way to get more involved in developing the work and prominence of Greens in the local area, and you’ll be playing an important role in making sure we work more effectively as a team. Roles will be circulated in shortly.

We meet in the Persevere room of the Leith Community Centre. Access via the outside stairs, or via lift.

All members and supporters welcome! If you haven’t been to a meeting before and would like to touch base first, you can email our membership secretary Kevin Whitelaw: leith.leithwalk@scottishgreens.org.uk – say hello and ask any questions.

If you live in the area, would like to be involved but can’t come to meetings, check our Twitter @GreensPersevere, or email us to discuss helping out in other ways.

Edinburgh Branch AGM @ Augustine United Church

AGM: calls for committee nominations and branch motions

The AGM is open to Edinburgh Green Party members only. Doors open 7pm; the meeting starts at 7.30pm.
If you can’t attend in person, join the meeting via Skype: email comms.edin@scottishgreens.org.uk for the Skype link.

Call for nominations
We would encourage all members to think about standing for a committee position – it is a great way to get more involved in what the branch does, and you will be playing a vital role in making sure campaigns, meetings and local teams run smoothly. The committee meets monthly – 1st Thursday of the month and uses Slack and email to communicate and plan throughout the month.

You can find descriptions for committee roles here https://members.greens.scot/file/standing-edin-green-committee-2019pdf

In addition to the committee roles, we will be recruiting up to three people to join our delegation team to national council meetings.

To apply, send a 200 word statement to edinburgh@scottishgreens.org.uk, along with the names of two members who are happy to nominate you. Please note that members can only offer nominations to two people in this election.

The deadline for applying to be a committee member is noon on 26th June. Candidate statements will be collated and circulated to members before the AGM. If there is a position with no nominees, we will accept nominations from the floor at the AGM.

Passing motions
Motions can be passed at the AGM which:

a) change the standing orders or constitution of the branch (you can see these here: www.edinburghgreens.org.uk/site/about)

b) instruct the branch to act in a certain way, for example to endorse a campaign, review processes, or hold a meeting on a certain subject

c) propose a local team (or teams) to become a sub-branch

d) instruct Edinburgh branch to take a motion to the Scottish Green Party AGM in October (motions which are brought from branches are automatically ranked higher than motions brought by individuals).

Your motion may have a preamble explaining the purpose of the motion and any essential context which should be no more than 200 words. The motion itself must clearly and unambiguously state the changes to a named branch document you wish to make, or,  the decision or action that you wish the branch to take.”

If you’re thinking of submitting a motion, you may like to contact the sitting branch committee as soon as possible for guidance on formulating it.

Motions should be submitted via email to edinburgh@scottishgreens.org.uk.

Motions deadlines:
Motions to be submitted:Noon 17th June
Motions to be circulated to members: 20th June
Amendments to motions to be submitted: Noon 22nd June
Amendments to be circulated: 23rd June
Emergency motions to be submitted: Noon 26th June

Edinburgh Branch Meeting @ Augustine United Church
Jul 25 @ 18:45 – 21:30

This meeting is open to members and non-members, and is in two parts:

1. New Members event. 18:45 – 20:00. This is to welcome new members (or prospective members), but all are invited. Discover how the party works and how to get involved; meet some of our elected representatives, and chat with members from your local team. We will also hear reports from our Green councillors and MSPs.
We hope you’ll stay on for the second part of tonight’s event (below).

2. Edinburgh’s
Food Strategy. 20:00 – 21:30.
Hear from guest speakers about their work to change the way that we think about, produce and consume our food. We will be joined by:

  • Nourish Scotland to talk about their work in the world of food policy (Stephanie Mander – Policy and Campaigns Officer);
  • SHRUB Coop, whose food sharing hub is reducing local food waste (Sydney Chandler – Food Sharing Hub Coordinator);
  • The Grove Community Garden, Fountainbridge: Wendy Lord on local food growing initiatives in the city.

Following short talks and a Q&A, we will discuss what this means for Edinburgh and what Greens should be campaigning for in the city.

In the spirit of food sharing and waste reducing, we will be running a food bring and swap – bring your garden produce, home baking or preserves and swap for something else. Don’t worry if you have nothing to swap – donations to the Scottish Greens are also accepted!

Doors open 18:30. If you would like to join the meeting remotely via Skype, please email comms.edin@scottishgreens.org.uk for the Skype link in advance.

Reframing Independence: workshop for activists @ Nelson Hall
Jul 28 @ 12:30 – 16:30

Reframing is a technique which enables you to get your point across to another person without reinforcing their existing preconceptions.

Facts alone do not change people’s opinions – conversely, in many cases, presenting clear facts actually reinforces misconceptions.

This workshop is aimed at activists who wish to reassure the undecided on the merits of Scottish independence. The skills learned are applicable to any issue and are useful in helping out with stalls, social media debating, canvassing etc.

Sessions include reframing essentials, communication techniques and participant action plans.

The event will be run by Bill Mills who has worked closely for several years with Bill Dale who has been developing a reframing programme for the Yes movement based on the work of cognitive scientist George Lakoff.

Open to Scottish Green Party members and supporters. Numbers are limited, so please email seeg@scottishgreens.org.uk to secure your place.

This event is organised by South East Edinburgh Greens.
