Steve Burgess is the Green councillor for Southside/Newington ward, and was re-elected on 4 May 2017. He serves as the Greens’ spokesperson for Environmental issues and Sustainability on City of Edinburgh Council. Steve also sits on the Council’s Regulatory committee (civic licensing) and the Licensing Board (liquor).

Steve was born in Edinburgh and has lived here most of his life. He went to school in Edinburgh and attended Edinburgh University where he studied Biological Sciences, later returning as a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for HIV Research at Kings Buildings.

When Robin Harper was elected as the first Green UK Parliamentarian in 1999, Steve joined Robin’s staff and worked in Parliament with the Green Group of MSPs for eight years, latterly as Head of Research.

Steve was elected to City of Edinburgh Council in 2007 to represent Southside/Newington ward. Steve was a Convenor of the Green Group of Edinburgh Councillors for 8 years.

Steve is married to Julita and they have two children. When not at the City Chambers or at home with family, Steve likes to play second fiddle in a Scots music session and enjoys sailing and also mountain walking.

Your local Green Team

South-East Edinburgh Greens (SEEG) is a sub-branch of Edinburgh Greens and covers Southside/Newington and Liberton/Gilmerton wards.

The team meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7pm in The Gray Room, Nelson Hall, 5 Spittalfield Crescent, EH8 9QZ. All Edinburgh Greens supporters are welcome – you don’t have to be a member.
