Lothian Green MSP report – April 2025

Lorna Slater’s report to Edinburgh & West Lothian Greens

Top & Timely

My heart goes out to our trans members and our members who have trans friends and family members after the Supreme Court Ruling. The Scottish Greens are and will remain trans allies. We believe that trans women are women and trans men are men, and I am seriously worried about the human rights risks to trans people. Maggie Chapman and I have met today with activists to discuss an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

Party Spring Conference was held in beautiful Stirling. It was really well attended both by members and by supporting organisations.

Media & Chamber

Parliament has been in recess for two weeks this month, so fewer opportunities to speak, but have been able to contribute to debates in my portfolio area of Economy and Fair Work.

Regional & Campaigns

The next town hall meeting on Holyrood Park is on May 19th at the Charteris Greyfriars Centre, at 18:30 to 20:00. We will be hearing from HES and the Council and electing an interim committee to set up an official ‘Friends of Holyrood Park’ organisation. It is free, but the last meeting was very full, so please get your ticket from eventbrite.

Committee & Portfolio

The draft Community Wealth Building bill is disappointing on the surface of it, so I am meeting with stakeholders in this space to see what opportunities for amendments there might be and how we can progress ambitions on compulsory sales and purchase orders, a community wealth fund, and other more ambitious policies in this space.

The Committee for Economy and Fair work continues our enquiry into Scotland’s skills landscape in particular looking at the needs of the green economy and how apprenticeships and work-based learning can be improved.

Other things

I went on a short break to Orkney over April recess and met up with Orkney Green Councillor Kris Leask.

Nova and I did not win Holyrood Dog of the Year, but we were the cutest. Well she was.
